Dzongs are classified into three periods.

1- Early Medieval Dzongs

Dzongs that are built before 17th century or before the arrival of Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyel.  

2-Medieval Dzongs

Dzongs that are built after 17th century or after the arrival of Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyel.

3-Modern Dzongs

Dzongs that are built after 19th century.
